Legislators are being urged by AARP Alabama to assist caretakers and update the guardianship system.
An advocacy group is urging lawmakers in Alabama to take further action to safeguard the elderly population of the state.
Montgomery, Alabama (WSFA) AARP Alabama wants lawmakers to return from spring break with significant improvements, ranging from giving priority to caregivers to updating laws that prevent abuse.
According to Jamie Harding of AARP Alabama, we try to communicate with legislators and help them understand the difficulties that people 50 and older are facing. This year, the group has made helping family caregivers a key priority.
According to AARP, family caregivers give their loved ones more than $8 billion in unpaid care.By administering medication and offering transportation, caregivers play a critical role in assisting seniors to lead more independent lives. Many of these caregivers are overworked and have jobs as well, according to AARP.
According to Harding, caregivers have to pay hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets for gas to get their loved ones to appointments and medical supplies. We believe that some of the financial strain could be reduced with the help of a caregiver tax credit.
The growth of senior adult homes and community-based services may potentially provide additional respite. In order to stop neglect, AARP also wants lawmakers to update the adult guardianship system.
The Colby Act, passed by lawmakers last year, allows people with disabilities and the elderly to choose advisory groups over conservatorship or guardianship. The establishment of a list with the locations of all active guardianships is now supported by AARP.
AARP Alabama also prioritizes assisting veterans, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and safeguarding data privacy.AARP is also interested in enhancing food security. Legislators decided to progressively reduce the state’s 4% grocery tax during the last session. Last year, it fell to 3%, and supporters want to see it even lower.
People are simply so tight on cash that it would benefit them more if they had to pay less tax on their groceries. stated Harding.AARP Alabama also prioritizes assisting veterans, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and safeguarding data privacy.
