DeMarcus Ware has good sportsmanship. On reality TV, why else would a former NFL player dress as a koala and perform a 1980s pop song?
This week, Ware—a Pro Football Hall of Famer and native of Auburn—surprise appeared on “The Masked Singer” and performed a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”
It turns out that the formidable athlete possesses some really amazing pipes. On Wednesday’s broadcast, Ware sang a cover of the 1985 synth-pop smash to showcase his vocal prowess.
Celebrities compete on “The Masked Singer,” hiding their identities while donning extravagant costumes, until they are ousted or crowned the season’s winner.
Wearing a furry helmet and attire reminiscent of a daring explorer, Ware, 41, appeared on the stage as Koala.
(Remember Puss in Boots from the “Shrek” movies, or the Three Musketeers.) Although they got close by identifying former NFL players like Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, and Terry Crews, none of the judges on “The Masked Singer” were able to accurately determine who he was.
Ware was revealed and vanquished at the conclusion of the show.
On the show, though, he left a lasting impression, surprising judges Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Rita Ora, and Robin Thicke. The four cheered for him and called Ware “a pretty fantastic vocalist,” but they all startled when he removed the Koala helmet. Astonished fans also appeared in the studio audience.
Ware was kind as he left the program, assuring host Nick Cannon that he enjoyed singing in character.
“I’ve always worn a mask, but I was able to sack quarterbacks by doing it,” stated Ware. “And now that I was wearing the Koala mask, nobody recognized me, and my actual self emerged. It was enjoyable for me. I’ve never had a more enjoyable experience than this one.
Ware played defensive end and outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos for most of his NFL career. Ware led the Broncos to victory in Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers while playing for the Cowboys. He was a superb tackler and forced fumbler. 2017 saw his retirement from the NFL.
Deeply rooted in Alabama, Ware attended Auburn High School and joined the football team in his junior year.
Following his transfer, Ware became a star player for the Troy Trojans football team at Troy University.
He was selected as the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Troy University.
Ware revealed a more compassionate side in a video interview following his departure from “The Masked Singer,” despite his combative nature on the field. As he sleeps with a koala toy, Ware revealed in the video that he chose to dress as a koala because that’s his small son’s favorite animal.
Ware replied, “Dad actually got to be a koala.” “He’s going to be aware that koalas can sing.”
The koala will be aware that it dances. I know I have Little Man at home, and the koala is still here, so even if I’m bidding goodbye to the huge head,
Ware has, incidentally, made appearances on reality TV before.
Alongside professional partner Lindsay Arnold, he participated in the 2018 season of “Dancing with the Stars.” With a strong performance in the ballroom, Ware left the ABC reality competition in a tie for seventh place.
People from Alabama haven’t been on “The Masked Singer” very often, although country music artist Sara Evans, a former resident of Birmingham, competed as Mustang on Season 9 and sang a cover of Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again.”
In addition, a few supporters of “American Idol” are certain that an Alabaman winner of the show made an appearance on “Masked Singer” earlier in the season and sang as part of The Beets, a costumed pair. (The Beets’ identities are currently unknown.)
