On Saturday, March 16, Jannik Sinner pronounced Carlos Alcaraz the worthy victor of their quarterfinal match at the Indian Wells Masters 2024.
In a match marred by rain at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Alcaraz pulled off a remarkable comeback against Sinner to secure his spot in the championship match for the second year in a row.
Throughout the match, the Spaniard made six attempts to break Sinner’s serve and was successful three times. In addition, he outperformed Sinner in terms of first serve points won, keeping a 70% conversion rate compared to 65% for the match, which he won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just over two hours.
The Italian praised the winner after the game for his effort.
“Obviously, he puts a lot of pressure on you, [Carlos Alcaraz] makes things very difficult to play,” Jannik Sinner stated during the Saturday press conference following the game.
Sinner’s 4-3 lead in their head-to-head matchup with the 20-year-old was gone with the defeat. But he promised to step up his game so he could defeat Alcaraz the next time they faced off.
“I need to work on a few things and try to defeat him once more. That, in my opinion, is another benefit and beneficial aspect of this activity. I made the mistakes today,” Sinner continued.
Later, the Italian wished the reigning champion well in Sunday’s (March 17) matchup with Daniil Medvedev. He declared:
“In my opinion, the contest was still excellent. We both played pretty well, in my opinion. A few of the rallies were quite entertaining. He really did deserve to win tonight, and I hope he does well in the championship match.”
“Carlos Alcaraz is moving really, really fast, he can play with a lot of spin” – Jannik Sinner
During the press conference for the Indian Wells Masters 2024, Jannik Sinner emphasized Carlos Alcaraz’s dexterity and skill at manipulating spin on the ball.
“He [Carlos Alcaraz] is moving really, really fast especially on this court where the ball bounces really high, it’s not easy to play against him, because he can play with a lot of spin,” Sinner said.
Moreover, Sinner pointed out that he was doomed because he was unable to generate any elements of surprise against his adversary.
“What I failed to see today, though, was that I was occasionally too predictable. I felt let down since I was performing the same things repeatedly. The World No. 3 said, “You know, like I was playing really good the first set.”
