After defeating Auger-Aliassime, Rublev disclosed the health issues he has been experiencing during the competition.
“At the beginning of the week, starting on the weekend I had, I don’t know what exactly it is,” Rublev said to Sky Sports Tennis. We check at the hospital tomorrow.
“I had to consume baby food for the first few days since I experienced a burning sensation in my throat due to a virus or other obstruction.
After overcoming second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and overcoming Taylor Fritz in the final, Rublev had the worst start of his career when he gave up two double faults in the opening game of the match, falling behind 4-1 as Auger-Aliassime rattled off several winners.
The Canadian was already well in control of the match when the seventh seed rallied and broke Auger-Aliassime. He served effectively to take full use of his powerful forehand and won the opening set at the net.
However, Rublev, who had already defeated local favorite and second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, was much more aggressive in his shot selection in the second set, which ended in a serve.
In addition, the Russian discovered his range on the opening serve and consistently forced Auger-Aliassime to play catch-up before sealing the crucial break at 6-5 to force a deciding.
The final set also followed a same pattern, with serve up until Rublev broke once more at 6-5.
Under pressure to continue in the competition, Auger-Aliassime committed two double faults, the second of which gave Rublev the victory in an underwhelming final.
