Odell Beckham Jr.: Who is he?

Born on November 5, 1992, Odell Cornelious Beckham Jr. (also abbreviated as OBJ) is an American football wide receiver who plays wide receiver for the National Football League’s Baltimore Ravens.

Beckham, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was named to the first team of the 2013 All-American College Football Team while playing football for the LSU Tigers. The New York Giants selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Beckham played football, basketball, and track at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans.

He hauled in 45 passes for 743 yards and 10 touchdowns in his junior year. He became just the second athlete in school history to achieve 1,000 receiving yards in a season as a senior after hauling in 50 receptions for 1,010 yards and 19 touchdowns. The other was Cooper Manning.

He also averaged 30.0 yards per punt return and ran for 331 yards and six touchdowns. He also passed for 90 yards and one score.In addition to being selected for the Louisiana 2A All-State first team and the Times-Picayune 2011 Blue-Chip list, he was named the District 9-2A Offensive MVP and made The Advocate’s Super Dozen.

In basketball, Beckham lettered all four years, and in his junior and senior years, he was chosen for the all-district team.

He followed in his mother’s footsteps and was an excellent track and field athlete. He finished sixth in the 200-meter dash and long leap at the LA 2A State Meet while attending Newman High School.

He also won silver in the long jump at the 2010 Newman Invitational. The Newman 4 x 100 m and 4 x 200 m relay teams included Beckham.

Starting at LSU in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, Beckham was named the Paul Hornung Award winner in 2013.

He shattered multiple NFL rookie receiving records in his debut season with the New York Giants. He was the first player to collect over 75 receptions, 1,100 yards, and ten touchdowns in a rookie season. He also broke the rookie mark for the most average receiving yards per game.

When Beckham made a one-handed touchdown reception while tumbling backward in a Sunday night football game against the Dallas Cowboys during Week 12 of his rookie season, it went viral and was dubbed the greatest catch ever made by many analysts and players. The 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year was awarded to Beckham.

He became the NFL’s fastest player to amass 200 career receptions and 4,000 career receiving yards in 2016. After leading the Giants to an 11-5 season record in 2016, he had his first 100-reception season and made it to the NFL playoffs for the first time in his career.

In each of his first three seasons, Beckham was selected for the Pro Bowl and twice made the second team All-Pro.

Midway through the 2021 season, Beckham inked a contract with the Los Angeles Rams following a run with the Cleveland Browns.

The Rams and Beckham eventually prevailed in Super Bowl LVI. Before joining the Ravens in 2023, he missed the entire 2022 season recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in the Super Bowl.
