According to Sacramento police, former Boise State football player Greg Grimes was shot and died early on Monday morning outside of a nightclub in Sacramento.
According to Kathy Lester, chief of police in Sacramento, the initial calls regarding the incident were received on Monday at 1:51 a.m.
Despite being taken to a local hospital immediately away, Grimes’ life could not be saved. After the shooting, four more people suffered injuries.
Grimes, thirty-one, played defensive tackle for Boise State from 2009 to 2012, during a fantastic run of the program that included a 49-4 record and a Fiesta Bowl victory over TCU.
It was Andy Avalos’s first season as head coach of Boise State and Grimes’ senior year as the defensive line coach of the Broncos.
Avalos released a statement on Monday stating, I, along with the whole Boise State football family, are devastated to learn about the passing of Greg Grimes. He was a fraternity member who passed away far too soon. We shall miss him.
Grimes was the first athlete to be awarded a college scholarship in any sport from Inderkum High School, which is located close to Sacramento.
He returned to Inderkum after his playing career ended to coach football and work with special education pupils until he departed in December to start his own staffing company, as reported by the Sacramento Bee.
Todd Hamasaki, a former football coach at Inderkum, told the Sacramento Bee, “He was a fantastic coach and role model to so many students who wanted to do what he did – coach.
Jaceyon, Grimes’ 4-year-old son, is left behind.

There have been no arrests by police, and they are currently investigating leads.
The gunfire also injured four more people.
