The Broncos are about to enter the postseason after their regular season concludes. Boise State finished the season with a 22-9 record (13-5 MWC) after winning two of the final three games in March.
NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY
A major home game against the University of New Mexico kicked off in March.
We’re playing very well, according to head coach Leon Rice. “I could tell the New Mexico team was well-prepared as soon as I saw them. To defeat them tonight, we were going to need to play our best game.
They also engaged in an “A” game. The Broncos led 35-33 at the end of a close first half, but in the second half, the Blue and Orange really got going.
Boise State began establishing an ever-widening lead early on and never let it go. The Broncos never looked back after sophomore guard Tyson Degenhart’s three-pointer put them ahead by eleven.
Degenhart scored 23 points on the night, 15 of which came in the second half, to help the Broncos hang onto a double-digit lead that they held for the last six minutes of the game. Boise State wins 89-79.
RENO UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA
After their impressive home court performance, Boise State’s matchup with Nevada was underwhelming.
Boise State had a difficult time playing the Wolf Pack at home in their most recent game.
Nevada tied their season best with 12 three-pointers, half of which came from senior guard Hunter McIntosh, who made 6-6 three-pointers off the bench.
“McIntosh has the opportunity to start a few games and is coming off the bench with a rhythm; Steve (Alford) has them playing wonderfully,” Leon Rice remarked. They have an intriguing backstory, as they went from being among the worst three-point shooting teams in the league to possibly the best. They had a fantastic game today, and winning in this conference requires that.
And good they are from three, because the Broncos gave up more than eight of them in the first half of this season for the first time, and it was also the second time they let an opponent shoot 50% from beyond the arc.
The Broncos were not overly impressed with the game’s conclusion. When the clock struck zero, the Wolf Pack easily defeated them 76-66, never giving up eight points.
State University of San Diego
Despite having an inconsistent second half of the season, No. 21 SDSU entered the game ranked 21st in the country. Boise State used this opportunity to cap off the regular season in a spectacular way.
The last few minutes of the game might indicate more if the score at the end isn’t sufficient.
The game went into overtime when Roddie Anderson III tied the score at 72 with a jump shot with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
“When you’re a child, you dream about these times,” said Roddie Anderson III. “I felt like I could make the floater in our little play, Up, so I went down the middle, and by God’s grace, it went in.”
The first to act was Boise State. Cam Martin made a basket at the three-minute mark to make the score Boise State 74-72. Max Rice unleashed an almost forty-foot bomb from the logo to put Boise State ahead by five points after a minute and a half of play without a basket. The fierce Bronco possession appeared to end in a shot clock violation.
But the Aztecs made a comeback. With a minute and a half remaining, Micah Parrish made a layup, and in the last seconds of overtime, Damion Trammell of SDSU made a three-pointer to tie the score at 77.
After Anderson III missed a layup, the Broncos quickly drove the court again, and with 1.7 seconds left, Martin pulled down an offensive rebound, was fouled, and made both of his free throws.
With a chance remaining, SDSU passed the ball past half court, and on their senior night, none other than Cam Martin raised his arm to snuff out any possibility of a successful outcome for the Aztecs.
“We have seven road victories in the league, and we have such tough guys,” Leon Rice remarked. “You need tenacity to succeed in this, one of the most difficult contests in the nation. To win, we persisted in our fight, made crucial threes, and adjusted our defense.
Boise State has won six of their past seven games this season in addition to their seven victories on the road.
The regular season for the Broncos is over. They are now ranked second in the MWC, but they won’t get their seeding for the Mountain West Tournament until March 17, 2024. The tournament begins on March 13 in Las Vegas.
