Jaylen Brown Inks $304 Million Extension, Richest in NBA History

A Boston Celtics player will be competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris alongside teammates Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday thanks to Kawhi Leonard’s departure from Team USA.

However, it’s not NBA Finals MVP and All-Star Jaylen Brown.

USA Basketball confirmed at noon ET on Wednesday that Celtics guard Derrick White will replace Leonard on its 12-man Olympic roster. About eight minutes later, Brown posted the following on Twitter/X:

Since Brown hasn’t given any more information, those three emojis with raised eyebrows might theoretically be about anything. It’s also possible that Brown is just expressing his happiness that White made Team USA in this way.

However, a sizable segment of NBA fans read Brown’s remark as an expression of his conviction that he was “snubbed” off Team USA’s selection and ought to have been chosen over White.

If Brown feels that way, he has a valid argument: After finishing a great season in which he averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, the 27-year-old is among the top two-way wings in the world. Even better, he guarded the best player on the other team most of the postseason, winning MVP awards in both the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals. He would have been a perfect fit to take Leonard’s place as an outstanding two-way wing.

Nevertheless, given that his Celtics buddy was selected instead, Brown’s post isn’t the greatest impression. If Brown is truly pleased for White behind closed doors, he is causing needless controversy by allowing others to infer that he is angry that White was selected rather than him.

But White doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would allow this to become a problem in the Celtics locker room, and Brown is accustomed to being passed over. Thus, perhaps this will spur Brown to put in more effort this offseason to assist Boston in defending Banner 18 as White, Tatum, and Holiday compete for gold in Paris.
