The bullpen simply cannot be the downfall of the Boston Red Sox again in 2025.
After positioning themselves for a playoff run by the All-Star break, the Red Sox completely fell apart in late July and August, with their bullpen being a major issue. They blew 18 of 32 save opportunities in the second half and had the worst bullpen ERA by a considerable margin.
With Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin set to become free agents, the Red Sox may need a bullpen overhaul. In-house options like veteran Liam Hendriks, who’s recovering from injury, and rookie Justin Slaten are promising, but none are guaranteed solutions.
Given this uncertainty, the Red Sox could look to free agency for a reliable closer. However, the market is thin, and top closers have become quite expensive. One potential target stands out—Texas Rangers All-Star Kirby Yates, who had a standout 2024 season with a 1.17 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 61 1/3 innings.
At 38 in 2025, Yates likely won’t demand a hefty contract, with Spotrac projecting a one-year deal worth $6 million. This affordable option would give the Red Sox more flexibility to invest in other areas, such as starting pitching or right-handed hitting, while still aiming to build a championship-caliber team. Yates, with his proven track record and strong 2024 campaign, could be a key piece in their bullpen.
