After a difficult 2023 year, many predicted Boston would improve in the offseason by adding a few high-profile free agents. The Red Sox signed Lucas Giolito, but they haven’t added any other noteworthy players to the rotation and have chosen to reduce salaries.
Giolito may end up missing the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury, which is devastating news for the Red Sox. Boston has also had to cope with a few more injuries.
According to Rob Bradford of WEEEI, Red Sox reliever Chris Martin had a scare on Saturday when he had to end his bullpen session early because of discomfort in his groin. However, the team received some positive news concerning Martin on Sunday.
Bradford stated that he had just spoken with Chris Martin. Walking well and explaining that yesterday’s (tight groin) bullpen session cancellation was merely a precaution. We’re now playing catch.
Martin was among the Red Sox’s most valuable relievers in the previous campaign, and in 2024, he should continue to be a key member of the team.

With Martin and Kenley Jansen in the bullpen, the team is perceived as having one of its strongest spots; but, if the veteran is sidelined by injury, this might alter.
Although Boston still has a lot of work to do to strengthen the team, Opening Day is quickly approaching. The Red Sox still need one or two more starting pitchers.
The club’s top focus at the moment should be the rotation, but if injuries keep happening elsewhere, things could get even more complicated.
Chris Martin is now formally a Red Sox player.Although Martin and the organization had reached an agreement last week on a two-year $17.5 million contract, the Red Sox officially announced the deal on Thursday.
The 36-year-old Martin will split 2022 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. Between the two teams, he was 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA, a 0.982 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched. In 26 games during the Dodgers’ stretch run, he was 3-1 with a 1.46 ERA.
With the addition of closer Kenley Jansen on Wednesday, the Boston bullpen will have an opportunity to use him as a high-leverage reliever.
In a lineup that also features left-handers Josh Taylor and Joely Rodríguez, Martin will be among the elite choices alongside Tanner Houck, John Schreiber, Ryan Brasier, and Zack Kelly.
Martin, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound product of Arlington, Texas, has spent his pitching career with the Rockies, Rangers, Braves, and Yankees.
After a successful audition during spring training, Boston originally signed him out of independent ball, thus he is no stranger to the Red Sox organization.
Before being sold to the Rockies in December 2013 for infielder Jonathan Herrera, along with lefty Franklin Morales, he pitched for three seasons with Sox affiliates. In 2014, he made his major league debut for Colorado.
