The Boston Red Sox must make some front-office decisions after removing Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom and reassigning former General Manager Brian O’Halloran to a new position.
With everything up in the air, many people worried what would happen to manager Alex Cora. Typically, a new front-office manager gets to select their new captain, but this does not appear to be the case in Boston.
“Alex Cora confirmed that he will return next season,” MLB.com’s Ian Browne tweeted Wednesday. “It’s not surprising, but this is the clearest he’s been about it. He has one year remaining on his contract. He has definitely received assurances from ownership that he will return regardless of who the new boss of baseball operations is.”
Cora confirmed to reporters that he will be back next season. Regardless of the win-loss record, the Red Sox manager has clearly accomplished his goals in recent years. He’s gotten the most out of below-average rosters in recent seasons and has shown to be a winning manager when given the right resources. He has also consistently handled the challenges of the postseason.
While Cora’s retention is unsurprising considering his position in the organization, it is noteworthy that he is ready to start his third era. Most baseball executives get to choose their own skipper.
Cora intends to remain in his current position for the time being, but it would not be shocking to see him go into the front office in the following seasons.
