He wants to retain Billy Donovan as head coach and re-sign DeRozan.
But the franchise would probably have to trade Zach LaVine, who has three years and $138 million left on his contract, in order to bring back DeRozan at that salary and avoid paying a luxury tax for exceeding the salary ceiling.
Karnisovas believes that a luxury tax should not be paid in order to place ninth in the Eastern Conference.
“My perspective on the luxury tax is that you enter it if you can demonstrate that your team will finish in the top four,” Karnisovas stated.
“Being in play-in just doesn’t make sense if you’re going to be subject to the luxury tax.”
