Carlos Alcaraz, World No. 3, has withdrawn from the Italian Open, starting on May 6 in Rome, according to a message on his X account (previously Twitter).
Alcaraz, who failed to win his third Madrid Open in a row after losing three sets to Andrey Rublev on Wednesday, admitted that he was experiencing “some discomfort” in his right forearm.
“After playing in Madrid, I experienced some discomfort in my arm. Today, I had several tests and discovered that I had muscle edema in my pronator teres as a result of my recent injury. Unfortunately, I will be unable to play in Rome.
I need to rest so that I can fully heal and play without pain. “I am extremely sorry; I will see you next year, @InteBNLdItalia,” Alcaraz replied.
Alcaraz suffered the arm injury during a training session in Monaco before the start of the clay court season.
The Spaniard then had to skip the Monte Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open, but he battled through the injury at the Madrid Open, wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm.
It is unclear whether Alcaraz will be fit enough to compete in the French Open, the ATP Tour’s second Grand Slam of the year, which begins on May 20.
Alcaraz, 20, is 15-4 and has won one singles title (Indian Wells) in 2024.
