Carlos Alcaraz monitoring Jannik Sinner because Spaniards know that a challenger could thwart his intentions
With Jannik Sinner’s winning streak continuing, Carlos Alcaraz hopes to prevent the Italian from spoiling his plans.
Jannik Sinner is getting closer to Carlos Alcaraz’s No. 2 spot in the official ATP rankings, so the Spaniard is keeping a careful watch on the Italian.
The Spaniard lost the top ranking to Novak Djokovic in September of last year, and he is still attempting to get back. However, he is aware that if Sinner isn’t performing at his best, he could foil his strategy and outpace him.
As of right now, Sinner is the opponent to beat in 2024. The 22-year-old, who won his first Grand Slam championship at the Australian Open and then hoisted the trophy in Rotterdam, is unbeaten thus far. He rose to a career-high of No. 3 in the world with the latter victory.
Alcaraz is eager to prevent Sinner from climbing the rankings, having been monitoring him. With 9,105 points now, the Spaniard leads his opponent, who has 8,270. Neither guy is scheduled to compete in an official competition until Indian Wells, which takes place next month, following Alcaraz’s recent injury retirement in Rio.
Sinner, who made it to the semifinals last year, has the opportunity to increase his total if he advances farther this time around, although Alcaraz is defending the championship and 1,000 ranking points there. And the 22-year-old is breathing down his neck, as the current world No. 2 is well aware.

I catch his breath. Regarding Sinner’s present position in the standings, Alcaraz said to Marca, “I guess he still has 1,000 points, but for Jannik, that’s nothing.
The Spaniard, however, has his sights set on regaining his position as the world’s top player, not merely holding off his adversary.
I have to be as focused as I can to try not to let him catch up with me and retake No. 1, he continued. Since Djokovic has entered Indian Wells and Miami, two events he missed last year and can only accrue points at, he is currently assured of holding the top spot in the rankings until at least April.
However, Alcaraz will want to stay right behind Djokovic heading into the clay season, and it will be considerably more difficult for him to catch him if Sinner gets ahead of him first.
When they go to Miami, Sinner will have more work to do because, despite Alcaraz only making it to the semifinals last year, he is the 12-time title winner and will have more points to defend.
