More bad news for Carlos Alcaraz: according to tennis enthusiasts, Jannik Sinner may tie or surpass his record number of Grand Slam victories before the year’s end. The two-time Major winner has had an unsatisfactory start to 2024, with injuries sustained in Rio and several unusual losses. Sinner, meanwhile, is dominating the Australian Open and is in the best shape of his life. He has not lost all year. The Italian will have to defeat Alcaraz by winning three of the four Slams in a single year, a feat that Novak Djokovic has already accomplished three times.

Right now, Sinner is the man to watch. Since the US Open, the 22-year-old has only lost twice and triumphed over Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev. He carried over his success from an amazing 2023—winning in Beijing and Vienna and assisting Italy in winning the Davis Cup—into the new campaign.

The world No. 3 has won the Australian Open and the Rotterdam Trophy to support his success. He has not lost a single match this year. Formerly, Sinner was the only up-and-coming player to challenge Djokovic for the major titles; however, Sinner has since proven to be one of the greatest players in the world.

And now that Alcaraz has won two Grand Slam events, the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon, tennis aficionados think the Italian will surpass him. When asked which player would finish this year with the most Majors, Sinner received 73% of the vote from Express Sport readers, blowing Alcaraz out of the water.

Jannik Sinner won Rotterdam to complement his victory at the Australian Open.

Sinner just won his first Slam, whereas Alcaraz now holds two, so the 22-year-old will need to put in a huge effort to live up to the prediction. In the unlikely event that the Spaniard wins zero majors this year, Sinner needs to win at least two more. The world No. 3 would have to win three of the four Grand Slam competitions in 2024 because he has previously won the Australian Open.

Djokovic has accomplished this three times: in 2015, in 2021, and in the Wimbledon final last year, when he suffered his lone defeat at the hands of Alcaraz. In 2010, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer each achieved the feat of winning three Majors in the same season—2004, 2006, and 2007.

For Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer, even completing the Calendar Grand Slam—winning all four in a single season—has proven to be too much. In order to maintain his lead, Alcaraz will be hoping that Sinner doesn’t win any more major prizes this year.

The 20-year-old recently encountered a setback in Rio when he had to leave the competition after just two games. Following his announcement that he sustained a grade II lateral sprain, he rolled his ankle on the second point.

Alcaraz anticipates being ready in time for the March 3 Netflix Slam exhibition match in Las Vegas against Rafael Nadal. The Indian Wells Masters is where he will next try to defend his title.

The Spaniard hasn’t won a championship since Wimbledon in July, and he hasn’t advanced to a final since Cincinnati in August of last year. He has already fallen in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals in Buenos Aires this year.
