Carlos Alcaraz, distraught following Rio’s retirement, provides an update on injuries
Carlos Alcaraz’s dreadful 2024 season began on Tuesday when he was forced to withdraw from his match at the Rio Open due to an ankle injury he sustained early in the game.

Alcaraz found himself at the back of the court two points into his first-round matchup against Thiago Monteiro.

He attempted to shift course fast, but his right foot became trapped in the floor, causing him to roll his ankle.

After he fell to the ground and struggled to stand again, Alejandro Resnicoff, the ATP physiotherapist, wrapped his ankle and he moved to his bench.

When the world No. 2 returned to the court, he broke Monteiro’s serve, but the Brazilian paid back the favor by breaking in the following game to level the score at one.

Alcaraz signaled his resignation by walking to the net and shaking Monteiro’s hand after only 10 of the allotted 18 minutes had been spent actually playing.

“I’m going to get my ankle tested tomorrow to see if it’s something bad or not,” he stated.

“I felt terrible, and the physiotherapist assured me that it wasn’t too serious.” That was my initial impression.

Since I was experiencing pain after falling, I reasoned that it would be challenging to play further if I continued to experience that kind of agony.

The physiotherapist advised me to keep playing and monitor the situation. It didn’t feel better after a few points. I could sense the suffering.

I was having trouble moving, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to carry on. I decided to retire because I believed that if I continued to play for a long time, things would only grow worse.

Alcaraz managed to get off crutches and exit the court, but on his approach to the locker rooms, he was observed to be severely limping.

After losing in the Australian Open quarterfinal and being shocked in the Argentina Open semifinal last week, the two-time Grand Slam champion is currently 7-3 for the 2024 campaign.

His next match is the Netflix Slam in Las Vegas on March 3 against tennis legend Rafael Nadal. On March 6, he is scheduled to defend his Indian Wells Open championship.

In their head-to-head match, Monteiro is up 2-0 over Alcaraz; his only victory came in Melbourne in 2021.

The world No. 117 remarked, “This is so bizarre, it was the second point of the match.” Although it didn’t appear all that serious on the court, I saw a terrible twist when I watched it on the big screen. I can only now support him in getting better because he is a rising star in the younger age.
