MESA, Arizona –In addition to telling Justin Steele that he would be starting on Opening Day, Cubs manager Craig Counsell took Steele into his office on Friday afternoon to talk about the importance of the honor.
After revealing the choice on Saturday, Counsell remarked, “That conversation, it’s always a little more serious because I think it’s something they truly have earned.” You earn it throughout the course of a career.
After putting himself in the Cy Young conversation for a large portion of the previous season, Steele was an obvious choice, but he stated this spring that he wasn’t considering winning the award.
