Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes ‘there’s no doubt’ he could work with former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick amid reports Mike McCarthy ‘will NOT get extension and coach 2024 on an expiring deal’

Mike McCarthy’s future as the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach was the subject of much conjecture following the team’s surprising playoff defeat, but this week, team owner Jerry Jones made a special effort to praise Bill Belichick.

It is Belichick’s first job loss in almost thirty years as an NFL player. From 2000 until earlier this month, he served as the Patriots’ longest-tenured head coach in the NFL.

The Washington Commanders, Dallas’ bitter rivals, have the sole open head coaching position in the NFL and have not been in contact with Belichick during their search.

McCarthy has one year left on his contract as the Cowboys head into the 2024 season. The team has gone 12-5 in the regular season each of the previous three years, but McCarthy has only helped the team win one postseason game.

McCarthy’s dream of coaching Dallas to its first conference final since the 1995 campaign has yet to materialize, which has led some to speculate that Jones is privately keen to make a change if that bar is not crossed next season.

As McCarthy’s long-term status as Dallas’ coach is in doubt, Jones praised Belichick.

This is Belichick’s first job search following his firing by the Browns in 1996.

Jones told Yahoo! Sports, I like him and I know him personally. I have no doubt that we could collaborate. Not one. None.

It was apparently an inquiry about what he admired most about Belichick that prompted Jones’s remark. He avoided immediately responding to inquiries concerning the Cowboys’ prospects under Belichick’s leadership.

I don’t want to get into it because it would involve talking about someone I may have spoken to, and there have been rumors about coaching, Jones stated.

But I didn’t speak with anyone. I have only spoken with myself when it comes to head-coaching candidates.

A Jones-Belichick collaboration could only occur in Dallas, of course. Furthermore, if it occurs at all, it will be at least a year away.

Belichick was not hired as the Falcons head coach after his two interviews.

Approximately two weeks after declaring that he is 100% supportive of McCarthy as the head coach of the Cowboys, Jones paid tribute to Belichick.

The 81-year-old Jones was compelled to compliment Belichick, who turns 72 in April, as well.

Jones added of Belichick: We all know that he’s certainly exceptional, maybe at the top of his profession.

It’s absurd to claim that meeting one person can guarantee you a Super Bowl. For him, that’s too big of an expectation. Is he, however, the best professional football coach of all time? Possibly, quite possibly.

Jones continued, He is a friend, and I like him. I want to be really clear: I wouldn’t have any problems working with him.
