With just a few weeks before Broncos Training Camp presented by Ford, DenverBroncos.com is beginning its yearly roster analysis prior to the last stretch leading up to the regular season.
To prepare fans for a crucial training camp full of competitiveness, we’ll devote the next few weeks to examining every aspect of Denver’s roster.
We start with the defensive back corps of the Broncos.
The secondary for the Broncos will not resemble the one that began the 2023 campaign.
Last year, in Denver’s Week 1 game against the Raiders, Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson were positioned at safety, with Essang Bassey playing nickel cornerback.
Since then, all three of these guys have gone on, and the Broncos may add as many as four new players to their five-man nickel rotation, contingent on the outcome of the No. 2 cornerback competition.
In 2023, a few players who were expected to start in Denver’s revamped secondary started to establish themselves, with P.J. Locke emerging as a starter following his injury recovery. Former East Carolina undrafted player Ja’Quan McMillian also gained a significant role after stepping in as the nickel in Week 4 and consistently demonstrating his playmaking ability.
The one thing that never changes? Pat Surtain II, an All-Pro and Pro Bowler, won numerous more awards during his third season in the league.
The Broncos invested in safety and cornerback to bolster a secondary that demonstrated promise and a tendency to force turnovers late in the season. The acquisition of former Dolphins safety Brandon Jones, an ascending player with the ability to play both in the deep portion of the field and close to the line of scrimmage, may have been Denver’s largest free-agent signing.
In addition, the Broncos re-signed Locke, signed veteran cornerback Levi Wallace, and selected cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine of Missouri in the fifth round of the draft.
There should be a lot of interest at cornerback and safety as training camp draws near.
