Edwards, a running back, has decided not to enter the NFL Draft and will instead finish his studies at Michigan in 2024.
Michigan will have one of its best running backs for the 2024 campaign, even with Blake Corum leaving.
Donovan Edwards, a junior running back, declared on Monday that he will not enter the 2024 NFL Draft early and that he will play his last season at Ann Arbor.
Edwards revealed the news by sharing an image on social media with the caption, Michigan fans, I’ve returned.
It was anticipated that Edwards would be selected in the middle round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His junior season was rather lackluster; he ran for 497 yards at a pace of 4.2 yards per carry, had five touchdowns, and added 249 yards from 30 receptions.
However, Edwards scored touchdowns on the opening two possessions in Michigan’s 34-13 victory over Washington in the national championship game, running for 41 and 46 yards, respectively. 104 rushing yards were his total for the game after six carries.
Edwards is expected to be Michigan’s starting running back in 2024 when Corum leaves after declaring for the draft on Sunday.
Over the course of the last two seasons, Corum has established himself as one of the top running backs in college football. Since the 2022 season began, he has rushed for 2,708 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Against Penn State, Donovan Edwards scores a touchdown run of 22 yards.
Edwards will have to step in for Corum on multiple occasions. The 2022 season saw Corum miss the last two games and the bulk of Michigan’s victory over Ohio State.
Throughout those three games, Edwards amassed an incredible 520 yards of total ground gain. In 2022, he also scored seven touchdowns on the ground.
By staying in Michigan, Edwards has given the offensive a degree of continuity into 2024. Apart from Corum, Sunday saw the NFL Draft declarations of wide receiver Roman Wilson and quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Naturally, speculations over Jim Harbaugh’s tenure at the program have persisted. According to reports, he will be interviewed on Monday for the head coaching position with the Chargers.
