Star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown claims that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who was among the hottest head coaching prospects this winter, will stay in Detroit for the 2024 season because of unfinished business.
On his St. Brown Brothers podcast on Wednesday, Brown stated that Johnson had phoned him on Tuesday to let him know he would be staying in Detroit for a another season in order to support the team’s quest for a Super Bowl championship.

The 37-year-old was given the chance to apply for the openings with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but he chose to let them know that he would be staying in Detroit.
Washington’s position is still available as of Wednesday night, while Seattle hired Mike Macdonald, the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, as their new head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Johnson has chosen to stay with the Lions for the second season in a row by opting out of the hiring cycle. Prior to the 2023 season, he took an interview for the position of head coach in Carolina, but he turned down a second opportunity to remain in Detroit.
Johnson joined the Lions in 2019 and served as their offensive quality control coach before assuming the position as tight ends coach in 2020 and 2021. Prior to being elevated to offensive coordinator in 2022, he had worked as the passing game coordinator in 2021.
Under Johnson, the Lions’ offense had a standout 2023 season. They had the fifth-best rushing offense in the league, averaging 135.9 yards per game on the ground, and the second-best passing offense in the NFL, with 258.9 passing yards per game.
In 2023, Detroit also had the fifth-highest points per game (27.1).
With a 12-5 regular season record, the Lions captured the NFC North title for the first time since the 1993 campaign. For the first time since the 1991 campaign, they also advanced to the NFC Championship game.
Johnson will continue to guide a strong offense that features players like Sam LaPorta, St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jared Goff, and Jahmyr Gibbs when he returns in 2024.
Johnson will be hopeful Detroit can make it to the Super Bowl again after the team came very close to doing so this year.
