Just in: ‘I feel so sad!’ -following the Lions’ loss to the Tampa Bay, QB Jared Goff ap…

NFL

In terms of total yards, the offensive production of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was more than quadrupled by the Detroit Lions.

But when all was said and done, the Buccaneers emerged victorious from Ford Field. Missed opportunities were the deciding factor as the Lions struggled in the red zone, which plagued them. The Lions have only made one red zone touchdown in their last seven trips, and their last three drives have all ended with the Bucs inside their 30-yard line. Here are the Lions’ standout and forgettable players from their 20-16 loss against the Buccaneers.

STUD: DE Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson recorded three sacks in the first quarter of Sunday’s game, capping a perfect day for him. His first arrived while the Buccaneers were leading at a critical point. The third-year defensive end for the Lions got to Baker Mayfield in a third-and-goal situation and took the ball away. Though it stopped a touchdown and forced them into three points, Tampa Bay would rebound.

Hutchinson sacks were used in the first three series of the Buccaneers. With three sacks in the opening quarter of a game, he became the fourth player since 1994 to accomplish that feat. This season, he has 5.5 sacks.

Hutchinson would go on to add 1.5 more sacks in the second half, for a total of 4.5, further demonstrating his ability to operate on the edge.

DUD: CB Terrion Arnold

Arnold’s second NFL start did not go well. He was singled out early and reported for obstructing Mike Evans’ pass. The penalty, which happened close to the goal line, provided Tampa Bay with favourable field position for their first possession.

Arnold left the game for a short while because of a finger injury, and he returned with his left hand wrapped. He received four penalties in his first two games after committing a facemask penalty later in the match.

Additionally, he participated in the coverage breakdown that led to Chris Godwin breaking loose down the sideline that Arnold was manning on Tampa Bay’s first touchdown. The youngster seems to have gone with the deep cover of Mike Evans. But a misunderstanding led to Godwin being exposed on the sidelines.

Although the Alabama product is still getting used to the NFL game’s officiating style, he has a lot of potential.

STUD: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown

After playing quietly in Week 1, St. Brown made a strong comeback. With 11 catches for 119 yards, he had his 16th career 100-yard game. Throughout Detroit’s lone touchdown drive, he showed a great deal of toughness by coming back fast after taking a big hit close to the goal line.

St. Brown successfully converted a number of third downs, including a third-and-eight play that went for 17 yards to get the ball at the 1-yard line of the Bucs. His day was cut short, though, as he was knocked out during the Lions’ last drive, limping to the sidelines.

DUD: QB Jared Goff

Throughout Sunday’s game, Goff laboured terribly at times and was forced to pass more than 50 times. Among his two interceptions was one that came on his opening pass of the contest. The Lions thought there should have been a failed penalty call because there appeared to be contact with wide receiver Jameson Williams on that specific play.

But because he threw the ball late and over the middle of the field in the third quarter, his interception was unacceptable. There was no receiver in the vicinity of the misdirected pass that Christian Izien intercepted in the red zone because Tim Patrick was racing towards the pylon.

His interception was the first of the Lions’ three final red zone excursions, as they went 0-for-3 overall. The Lions’ fourth-down completion on the second trip fell short of the first-down marker. With six seconds left in the game, Goff’s last pass of the evening short-hopped Tom Kennedy, who was well short of the end zone.

Goff completed 34 of 55 passes for 307 yards, two interceptions, and no touchdowns.

STUD: S Brian Branch

Branch performed admirably after having some difficulties in Week 1. On the opening drive, he made a crucial deflection of a pass that prevented Tampa Bay from reaching the end zone.

Later, late in the first half, he made the defense’s only defensive play of the game with a leaping interception. Though the play gave the offence one more opportunity, the late-year blunder between the offence and the field goal crew ultimately cost them.

With six total tackles, the Alabama product tied the team high; this was his fourth interception of the young career.

DUD: TE Sam LaPorta

With just two receptions for 13 yards in the game on Sunday, the gifted tight end was unable to get the ball in the hands of the Lions’ offence.

LaPorta was kept silent at times, finding it difficult to break free from the Buccaneers’ coverage. Since both of his grabs occurred after halftime, he did not register a catch in the first half.

STUD: RB Jahmyr Gibbs

In the latter stages, Gibbs’ crucial runs helped ignite the Lions’ offence. In the penultimate drive, the Lions faced a fourth-and-1, and he made his best play when he broke loose for a 23-yard gain to the 13-yard line of Tampa Bay.

In crucial moments throughout the second half, the second-year running back displayed burst and explosiveness. He was also successful on seven passes from Goff. In the end, he gained 106 yards on 20 touches. David Montgomery, his opponent in the backfield, scored the only touchdown for the squad.
