PARIS — Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the French Open qualification to focus on grass and hard court training.
The 21-year-old was anticipated to fight her way through three qualifying rounds at Roland Garros, as she famously did on her path to winning the U.S. Open in 2021.
However, the British tennis player unexpectedly withdrew from the clay-court tournament.
“It’s crucial for me to continue laying the groundwork, and I’ll take the opportunity to do a healthy block before the grass and hard-court seasons to give myself a chance to stay fit for the rest of the year,” she added.
Raducanu started the tournament with a protected ranking of 103, but she is three positions out of the main draw and was passed over for a wild card.
She had a flying start to the clay-court season, defeating French combination Caroline Garcia and Diane Parry to take Britain to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, and then reached the quarterfinals of the WTA event in Stuttgart.

Raducanu pushed Iga Swiatek in a last-eight loss before struggling against Argentine qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle in the Madrid Open’s first round last month, claiming tiredness.
She hasn’t played since withdrawing from this week’s WTA event in Strasbourg, so this new withdrawal comes as a surprise.
