Everton defender Mason Holgate has returned to the club for pre-season training but looks likely to be allowed to leave this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The outlet stated on its website on July 10 that Holgate was seen in early pre-season photos, but the club has decided he is surplus to needs.

The 27-year-old is no longer in Sean Dyche’s plans after spending the previous season on loan at Sheffield United and then Southampton.

The club also released video of Holgate and his Everton teammates working out at Finch Farm on July 9.

Everton to offload another defender in squad revamp

Despite being prohibited by the Profit and Sustainability criteria, Everton achieved remarkable progress on the pitch last season.

After two years of teasing relegation, Dyche guided his team to a 15th-place Premier League finish in his first full season in charge of the team.

If PSR hadn’t deducted the Blues two points, they would have placed eleventh.

Dyche is now committed to building on his team’s success from the previous campaign and fielding a team that can move up the league standings.

Through the sales of Ben Godfrey to Atlanta and Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa, they were able to generate enough money before the June 30 deadline and escape another PSR fine.

The Red Devils appear to be undervaluing the club with their £80 million asking price for Jarrad Branthwaite, as they are getting ready to submit a third bid for the player (HITC, 10 July).

However, Goodison Park will keep up its sales as Holgate is ready to leave the team in the last year of his contract.

It will be challenging for the Blues to find a suitor because he has struggled to get consistent playing time at Everton and hasn’t performed well enough on loan.

But given that the Blues want to stay within PSR guidelines and raise money to reinvest in the team, it’s a decision that benefits both sides.
