As we wait for his next F1 move, Fernando Alonso responds to rumors about Adrian Newey.
“Legend” Fernando Alonso enthralled Aston Martin is connected to Adrian Newey
Although Ferrari has been the subject of much speculation as Newey’s next stop, should he choose to write another chapter in his F1 career, Aston Martin is also rumored to be interested in the driver. Newey and team owner Lawrence Stroll met at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where Stroll reportedly made a “big money” offer to Newey.
Furthermore, Alonso stated unequivocally that news of Newey’s potential move to Aston Martin was “good news.”
“First of all, I feel privileged to drive in Formula 1 today and for the last 20 years, sharing the sport with Adrian, obviously as a competitor,” he said to Formula 1. “He is a legend of the sport.”
“Plus, it is an honor. The fact that a sports legend and Aston Martin are connected in any way is already encouraging and a positive indicator for us.”
Mike Krack, the principal of the Aston Martin team, stated that extensive conversations among the grid began with Newey as soon as his planned departure from Red Bull became official, if not earlier.
He told Formula 1 that “eight teams started discussions immediately, or maybe even before, when someone like that is available on the market, so this is internal discussion and also discussions with him and the people around him.”
“It will be fascinating to observe how this battle plays out.”
When asked if teams interested in Aston Martin were among them, Krack responded, “Always.” Everyone is eager to learn.”
Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Newey said that his biggest career regret was never getting the chance to work with Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton. However, he does have the chance to eliminate one of those regrets should he return to Formula One, either working with Alonso at Aston Martin or with Ferrari, where Hamilton will race starting in 2025.
“Emotionally, I guess, to a point,” Newey said in response to the question of whether he regrets declining Ferrari in the past. He did so both in 1993 and 2014 during his IndyCar career. Absolutely.
“But just as, for instance, working with Fernando and Lewis would have been fabulous,. But it never happened. It’s just circumstances sometimes; that’s the way it is.”
Both Alonso and Hamilton will be in multi-year deals with Aston Martin and Ferrari, respectively, once Newey becomes a free agent during F1 2025.
