GM’s 750,000-Mile Super Cruise Hands-Free Coverage Is Missed by Three Vehicles
The hands-free routes now include minor highways in both Canada and the United States.
Not all of GM’s vehicles will benefit from the Super Cruise network’s expansion to 750,000 hands-free miles, according to an announcement made by the automaker.
The network now includes minor roadways connecting smaller towns and cities across the US and Canada. Later, more on that.
With the most recent 400,000 hands-free miles launched in late 2022, there is a significant increase. To put 750,000 miles into perspective, that’s roughly 130 trips from Los Angeles to New York and back.
This improvement translates to roughly six times more coverage than other systems, said the automation giant.
Since GM revealed last month that it was essentially integrating Ultra Cruise and Super Cruise, these enhancements have been expected.
After driving a Cadillac XT6 equipped with Super Cruise from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, we can vouch for GM’s claim that over 80% of owners who responded to the poll reported having a more enjoyable driving experience. With the technology engaged, more than 160 million miles had been traveled without an accident.
As a Level 2 autonomous driving technology, Super Cruise requires drivers to maintain complete focus on the road. A camera installed behind the driving wheel makes sure that drivers are not dozing off or distracted.
Other Level 2 autonomous driving technologies available in the US are Ford’s BlueCruise and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving.
For the time being, only Mercedes-Benz is able to use Level 3 autonomy in the US, though it’s important to note that BMW is catching up to its domestic competitor. For the record, Nevada and California are currently authorized states for the use of the Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot.
Vice President of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Anantha Kancherla stated, “GM is all-in on safely deploying Super Cruise as we make the technology available on more vehicles, more roads, and for more people to enjoy.
Adding LiDAR-mapped highways to the road network is a crucial component of that, as it doubles in this instance. We have an operational domain where we are confident in Super Cruise’s capabilities thanks to high-precision LiDAR mapping.
Updates over-the-air are now being distributed without charge and will stay that way until 2025. GM claimed that while the majority of cars with Super Cruise will benefit, the Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Bolt EUV, and Cadillac XT6 will not have access.
