Amidst rumors that he was about to be replaced, Roy Hodgson, the 76-year-old manager who has managed the English Premier League the longest, departed Crystal Palace on Monday, barely two days after becoming ill during a training session.
The former England manager claimed that he decided to resign in order to allow Palace to move forUpward with its intentions to name a new manager.
Shortly after, the team signed Austrian coach Oliver Glasner to a contract that would last through the 2025–2026 season to replace Hodgson. Before departing last year, Glasner guided Eintracht Frankfurt to the Europa League championship in 2022.
Hodgson remarked, “I understand that it might be prudent for the club to plan ahead at this time given recent circumstances.”
After the training ground incident on Friday, Hodgson was released from the hospital, according to Palace, and he was “doing well.”
Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington, two of his assistant coaches, were scheduled to lead the club in its league game against Everton late on Monday. With 14 games left, Palace was five points above the relegation zone.
After a dismal run of play under predecessor Patrick Vieira, Hodgson came to Palace in March of last year and easily guided the team to safety in the league. This was Hodgson’s second stint as Palace’s manager
