Packers Awarded Three Compensatory Picks

One of the major off-season events has occurred. Three more draft selections were awarded to the Packers.

Compared to Ted Thompson, Brian Gutekunst has shown a greater willingness to use free agency than Thompson did in the past.

Most people’s attention is focused there since Monday marks the official start of free agency.

Nevertheless, Gutekunst has never shied away from the fact that the NFL Draft is still the Green Bay Packers’ main source of revenue.

In a draft class that appeared to be assembling the new core of the Packers’ hoped-for championship team, Gutekunst made 13 selections last year.

The Packers received three additional picks for the April draft as part of the compensatory picks that the NFL awarded today.

Picks of 168, 219, and 255 were given to them.

a single selection in the final three rounds.

Allen Lazard signed a 4-year, $44 million contract to play with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets in New York, which resulted in the fifth-round pick.

Larger contracts typically result in a higher selection than a fifth-round pick, but Lazard had a difficult first season on the East Coast, going so far as to be declared healthy and inactive for one game.

While the Packers’ offense was still figuring things out early in the season, Lazard’s absence was felt, but Dontayvion Wicks—a fifth-round selection the previous year—largely took his output in stride.

Before moving back to Seattle after the 2022 season, Jarran Reed spent one good season in Green Bay.

Reed’s $9 million, two-year contract helped the Packers acquire a sixth-round pick.

With Reed’s exit, Devonte Wyatt and Karl Brooks were able to take more snaps. Wyatt was second on the defensive line with 48 pressures, only behind Kenny Clark’s 60. Wyatt had some good moments.

Gutekunst selected Brooks in the sixth round of the previous year’s draft class, and he turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

The trade of Robert Tonyan to Chicago and Dean Lowry to Minnesota gave the Packers a seventh-round selection.

Despite having a talent for huge plays, Lowry was mainly inconspicuous in his last season in Green Bay, which encouraged the team to keep bringing in young players.

Tonyan had an impressive 2020 season, but after rupturing his ACL in the 2021 campaign, he found it difficult to replicate that performance.

Carrington Valentine, who began the majority of the season after the team traded Rasul Douglas to Buffalo for a third-round pick prior to the NFL trade deadline, was Green Bay’s most significant seventh-round selection from the previous campaign.

They selected Grant Dubose, a wide receiver from Charlotte, with their compensatory seventh-round selection.

In the end, Gutekunst has three more chances to select impact players—or more ammunition to work with if he decides to pursue that course of action—now that he has three additional picks.

Moreover, he now has the full 11 picks from the NFL Combine that he had informed the Green Bay media he expected to have.

Determining Gutekunst’s plan for those selections is the next step.

“That additionally provides us with some maneuverability in terms of rearranging the draft order or potentially selecting players who are available, such as veteran players,” Gutekunst stated to the media.
