Former offensive line coach for the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers, Larry Beightol, passes away at age 81.
Larry Beightol, an offensive line coach for the New York Jets from 1990 to 1994, departed from this life on April 4 at the age of 81.
The NFL community, including the New York Jets, is in sorrow for 81-year-old offensive line coach Larry Beightol, who passed away last week.
Under head coaches Bruce Coslet and Pete Carroll, Beightol, also known as “Beck,” coached the Jets’ offensive line from 1990 to 1994.
In terms of allowing running yards and time of possession, the Jets offensive line was among the best in the NFL during his time in New York.
The product of Morris Township, Pennsylvania, was instrumental in the growth of former Jets linemen Siupeli Malamala, Dwayne White, and Cal Dixon.
Beightol coached for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1987–1988), San Diego Chargers (1989), Houston Oilers (1995), Miami Dolphins (1996–1998), Green Bay Packers (1999–2004), and Detroit Lions (2005), in addition to his tenure with the Jets.
Former offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers for seven years, Larry Beightol also oversaw the New York Jets offensive line from 1990 to 1994.
In 1968, Beightol was hired by William and Mary as the defensive line coach, his first position under Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy.
The following season, Beightol was shifted to the offensive line by future College Hall of Famer Lou Holtz, who took over as head coach.
He then continued his coaching career, holding positions at North Carolina State, Auburn, Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana Tech University. While serving as head coach there in 1979, he guided the Bulldogs to a 2-8 record.
However, Beightol’s most well-known accomplishment was perhaps his coaching of the Packers’ offensive line from 1999 to 2004.
During his seven seasons with the team, Green Bay made four trips to the playoffs. Frank Winters, the center; Marco Rivera, the guard; and Mark Tauscher, the tackles, were all future Hall of Famers for the Packers.
Beightol was admitted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Western Division) in recognition of his accomplishments.
When the lineman was admitted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2011, he was also requested to present Marco Rivera.
Beightol helped college athletes get ready for the NFL Combine at Competitive Edge Sports (CES) in Atlanta following the end of his NFL career in 2006. Beightol also oversaw national football training camps for elite high school players.
