Since they began dating in 2012, Maria, 28, and Grigor Dimitrov, 23, have been inseparable. In an interview with the Financial Times, Maria shares what keeps their romance going.
The five-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 player believes that their relationship success stems from a common understanding of the game and life on the tennis circuit.

Similar to Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, who have been married for 14 years, Grigor, who was born in Bulgaria, and Maria first connected on the tennis circuit.
Maria, who has been a professional tennis player since she was a youngster and now owns her own candy and lifestyle brand called Sugarpova, said that the foundation of her and Grigor’s relationship is their mutual appreciation for the game.
Maria told the Financial Times, “It’s good to have someone who genuinely understands and respects [what I do] and knows the drill.” Maria expects to win at Wimbledon this year.
Last summer, Maria and her partner of over two years, Grigor, took a break from their busy schedules to enjoy a romantic beach vacation in Mexico in between tennis events.
Similar to the 14-year-old married couple Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, who were also former tennis stars, Maria and Grigor, who were born in Bulgaria, first met on the tennis circuit and have been dating since 2012.
“In an athlete’s career, there are so many tiny variations that are not always easy to explain to the outside world,” she went on.
Therefore, it’s good that they understand and are aware of it.
Western Siberian native Maria has previously discussed how she and Grigor frequently had to squeeze in time together as and when they could between demanding tennis schedules.
Because of our divergent schedules and occasionally having to play matches on various days, we really don’t have much time throughout the tournament.
But because we usually have some free time at the end of the day, it’s always wonderful to catch up.
