Holger Rune explains his significant loss by saying he “should have pulled out” of the Miami Open.
After being completely destroyed in his debut match against Fabian Marozsan, Holger Rune has acknowledged that he should have withdrew from the 2024 Miami Open.
Although world No. 7 acknowledged that he was not “feeling 100% well” the day of the match, he said he had not anticipated his “energy level to be so low” on the court.
After being given a first-round bye as a seeded player, Rune lost badly to Marozsan in less than an hour on Sunday in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Many observers were taken aback by the match’s score and brisk play, especially considering Rune was coming off a strong run to the Indian Wells quarterfinals.
At the 2023 Italian Open, Marozsan, ranked 57th in the world, shocked Carlos Alcaraz, demonstrating his ability to pose a threat to elite players.
The gifted 24-year-old Hungarian has also shown promise in Masters 1000 competitions, making it to the 2023 Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, the last 16 in Rome last year, and Miami earlier this month.
As he anticipated the beginning of the clay-court season, Rune disclosed in a post on X that he had not been feeling physically well during the match.
Sadly, this marked the end of @MiamiOpen. He wrote, “I knew I wasn’t feeling well today, but I didn’t think my energy would be that low.”
“In retrospect, I ought to have left sooner. However, it’s always challenging because I’ve been practicing and eager to play for a week. Let’s return to Europe now. Miami, I appreciate your support.
Since he and coach Patrick Mouratoglou got back together last month, Rune has shown positive results. In his first competition after the Frenchman returned to his coaching role, he advanced to the Mexican Open semifinals in Acapulco before making his final eight appearances in Indian Wells.
