Boris Becker, the previous head coach of Holger Rune, declared he would be back.
Boris Becker’s remarkable tennis recovery will be verified after he takes a full-time teaching job.
After confirming that he is back to teaching full-time, Boris Becker’s recuperation and reintegration into the tennis world are now complete.
The 55-year-old three-time Wimbledon champion concealed £2.5 million in assets and loans to avoid paying obligations, and in April 2022, he completed eight months of a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
The legendary German tennis player suffered a sharp decline in popularity and, upon his release from prison, faced an uncertain future in which he hoped to compete at the highest level of the sport.
Becker, who joined Eurosport as a pundit, was able to speak again during the game. Since then, he has declared that he has effectively transitioned back into the tennis industry full-time, accepting a coaching role with world No. 6 Holger Rune.
“I can confirm that I am Holger Rune’s coach,” Becker stated in an exclusive conversation with the podcast of Eurosport Germany.
I’m a little pleased with him for asking. The exchange of messages has been ongoing for some time. It fit perfectly.
Because of his zeal and demeanor on the tennis court, Holger has always piqued my curiosity, and my schedule allows it.
Then Holger invited me to spend a training week in Monte Carlo. I also spoke with his mother, Aneke, and performance coach, Lapo Becherini, for a long time there.
Now it’s up to the three of us to take care of Holger. Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the tournament in Stockholm this week owing to already-arranged commitments.
I will, however, be in Basel at the latest. Afterwards, I intend to play Paris-Bercy alongside Holger with the aim of assisting him in reaching the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. That’s the primary goal and the task at hand.
Even though Rune completed the previous year strong—beating Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final—and is ranked among the top ten players in the ATP rankings, he has not been able to replicate his greatest performance in 2023.
Because of his victory in Paris, his performance in the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm, and his run to the Basel final the year before, he will drop a significant number of ranking points from his record in the coming weeks.
Rune will therefore need Becker to regain his form in order to remain in the top 10 of the standings, but Becker thinks the 20-year-old Dane still has a lot more to give.
“Holger is a rough diamond who has to be polished.” “I like his emotional outbursts,” he went on.
“I’ve previously coached Novak Djokovic, and while he wasn’t always fully himself on the court, that’s okay.
The question is how quickly you manage to get back into the game. Have you become more focused? Ultimately, winning the game is more significant than attempting to persuade your mother to get off the bleachers.
Since I love tennis so much, I figure that anyone who declines to coach one of the best 20-year-olds in the world has little interest in the sport.
Even though this is a very clear statement, attitude really does matter. That is, nevertheless, the main determinant of whether tennis matches are won or lost.
For me, the question is: Why would Holger go to China, for example? Is winning the competition or the first round the only objective? Is it so you can get points?
“That needs to be discussed, and it needs to be very clear what the goal is. I can conceive of several methods to improve it. I have an idea of where attitude, thought, and psyche start.
When we first met, Holger was perhaps fifteen or sixteen years old. That occurred during the ATP Finals, when I was still Novak Djokovic’s coach. Holger was our training companion.
That’s how long I’ve known him and his mother. We haven’t stopped speaking throughout. And now, the question was, “Can you help me?”
My answer was, “Yes, please allow me to see you in Monte-Carlo.” He went on to talk about the rest of the year. That provided me more time to travel to Basel, Paris, and, if we manage, Turin, so I was good with that.
When asked if their cooperation will continue into the future season, Becker—who is now forbidden from entering the UK due to the terms of his release from jail—said, “There’s no purpose in signing a two-year deal now when you’ve just been cooperating for a week.”
“After that, we’ll sit down and talk about the success of the tournaments, his enjoyment of them, and my thoughts on them.
We will now participate in these three events. After then, we’ll decide whether our partnership makes sense and whether to carry on until 2024, or if it was a fantastic experience, we’ll break up.
Since I can only help him if I am aware of his situation, we need to stay in close communication. Both off the field and in his personal life, that is true. Does he feel worried? Is he behaving strangely?
All of this has an impact on his training performance. I have to know what the causes are. Tennis coaches are typically needed in order to work as tennis psychologists.
