Van Niever defeats Alex de Minaur at the Rotterdam Open to move up to third in the world rankings

Jannik Sinner won the Rotterdam Open after dropping just one set.

After defeating Alex de Minaur in straight sets to win the Rotterdam Open, Jannik Sinner will rise to a career-high third in the global rankings.

The winner of the Australian Open defeated world number 11 De Minaur 7-5, 6-4, to become the highest-ranked male player in Italian history.

Sinner, who has already won 15 straight games, has now won 12 career titles.

The 22-year-old stated, I’m incredibly proud of the level I played at during this whole week.

We performed exceptionally well here a few weeks ago, as well as exceptionally well at the Australian Open.

Since losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the ATP Tour finals in November, the Italian has not lost.

Sinner broke in the first set’s sixth game to lead 3-2 after a close start.

The 24-year-old then shown tenacity to save two set points before rallying for a victory in the tense tenth game, which took more than fifteen minutes to finish.

But in the next game, Sinner broke right back and used his serve to finish the set.

The second set was equally tight, but in the seventh game, Sinner made the crucial break to go up 4-3, an advantage he would not let go of as the Australian started to wear down.

Against Sinner, his friend and former doubles partner, De Minaur, has now lost all seven of their encounters.
