Jannik Sinner is revelling in his status as one of the most famous sports stars in Italy and he has revealed his celebrity status has allowed him to become friends with one of his nation’s top footballers.
After leading his country to Davis Cup glory in November of last year and defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to victory in Malaga, Sinner’s status as an Italian national hero reached unprecedented heights. His January victory at the Australian Open further elevated his already increasing stature.
When Sinner visited with the Italian soccer team recently, they were getting ready for international matches against Ecuador and Venezuela. He disclosed that Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalie, had become friends with the team.
The goalie for Paris Saint-Germain, Donnarumma, has praised Sinner on social media for his achievements recently. Sinner has also opened out about their connection, which is based on their shared passion for video games, particularly Call of Duty.
Sinner said to the Tennis Channel, “I’m quite a good friend of Donnarumma and sometimes we play Call of Duty together.”
“Now, a little less, but communication has always existed between us. He is a genuinely kind man.
Sinner said, “I had the chance to talk to the players, which was really nice,” in reference to his encounter with the Italian soccer stars. The coach is very good. You know, I felt that was just an incredible experience.
It’s not the same as before. In addition to playing tennis, I enjoy being in sporting venues such as football and, if possible, watching the NBA off the court.
Sinner, a reserved 22-year-old who is uncomfortable in the spotlight, acknowledges that it has been difficult for him to adjust to being a major star in his native country.
Sinner went on, “I’m not looking for attention off the court.”
It is great and pleasant when someone recognizes me. In some ways, I suppose it’s a good problem to have.
On the other hand, there are occasions when going to a restaurant for a regular meal can be a little unusual. In some ways, I believe it’s a nice problem to have.
To be honest, I don’t really care how well-known I am because I’ve always carried out everyday activities. I’m just a regular boy or man who is growing into a man. While certain things do change, everything else remains the same.
After becoming a significant player in the men’s game’s future and being courted by some of the largest brands in the world, Sinner’s star profile is sure to climb.
Given that Sinner has defeated Novak Djokovic three times in their past four meetings, it seems as though the legendary player is closing down his legendary career.
Even though it will take a while for Sinner and his fiercest opponent Carlos Alcaraz to achieve the kind of widespread celebrity that has long been Djokovic’s lot, the two young talents vying for the biggest tennis titles are beginning to establish themselves as international sports legends.
