Sad news: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner loses aunt few hours after dedicating title to her

At Flushing Meadows in New York on Sunday, Jannik Sinner won his maiden US Open title in straight sets, upending Taylor Fritz’s American celebration, which was attended by a number of A-list celebrities.

With a convincing 6-3 6-4 7-5 victory on a patriotic Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Italian world No. 1 became just the fourth player in history to win both the Australian Open and US Open on hard courts in the same season, behind Mats Wilander, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

Sinner has had an incredible year, winning five titles this year—including the Cincinnati tune-up tournament last month—and making a significant breakthrough in Melbourne. As of right now in 2024, he has an incredible 55-5 record.

Supported by a biassed audience on Arthur Ashe that included pop sensation Taylor Swift and her fiancé Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, Fritz was determined to become the first American man to win the US Open since Andy Roddick did so in 2003.

However, Sinner let his tennis in New York speak for him. Sinner entered the event with a cloud hanging over him from his anti-doping debacle, in which he avoided a ban after testing positive twice in March.

Sinner reflects on recent months and dedicates win to aunt

“This title has great meaning for me because it represents a difficult time in my career.

“I adore tennis, and I train hard for moments like this, but I also understand that life happens away from the court.

I want to dedicate this title to my aunt because I don’t know how long I will have her in my life and she isn’t feeling well.

“She was very important for my life and she still is.”
