Juan Soto’s recent announcement to join the Mets is a monumental decision that reflects significant changes in both New York baseball teams’ strategies. Soto reportedly expressed that, while he cherished his time with the Yankees, he felt it was time to pursue a different challenge. This transition aligns with Mets owner Steve Cohen’s readiness to spend heavily on star talent, suggesting a potential offer exceeding $600 million. Cohen’s ambition to make the Mets highly competitive, possibly vying for the National League title, aligns well with Soto’s career objectives, ultimately making the Mets a compelling option for the outfielder
The Yankees, meanwhile, have faced payroll concerns and increasing luxury tax penalties, which likely influenced their decision to limit bidding on Soto. With Hal Steinbrenner’s preference to bring down the team’s $300 million-plus payroll, the Yankees would likely face both financial and logistical challenges in meeting the record-setting contract Soto seeks. This significant investment marks a strategic departure for the Mets, emphasizing their intent to compete with powerhouse teams by securing marquee players.
While some fans may view Soto’s decision as a blow to the Yankees, the Mets anticipate that his addition will make a dramatic impact on their roster and their competitiveness for upcoming seasons. The deal not only places the Mets in the spotlight but also raises the stakes in New York’s baseball rivalry.

The New York Jets placed wide receiver Allen Lazard on injured reserve Thursday, sidelining him for at least four games and leaving quarterback Aaron Rodgers without one of his key targets. Lazard sustained a chest injury during the Week 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Previously the Jets’ No. 3 receiver behind Garrett Wilson and recent addition Davante Adams, Lazard’s absence may prompt the team to retain Mike Williams rather than make him available for trades.
Williams, previously demoted to the No. 4 receiver spot following the Adams trade, could see increased playing time with Lazard out. The NFL trade deadline is November 5, and Lazard could return for the Jets’ December 8 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
Despite six dropped passes, Lazard is enjoying a strong season with 30 catches for 412 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns, marking one of his most productive years. His connection with Rodgers dates back to their four seasons together with the Green Bay Packers, making this a significant loss for the quarterback.
Lazard joined the Jets as a free agent last year on a four-year, $44 million deal but struggled initially, ending with only 23 catches. Rodgers’ return from a 2023 Achilles injury has boosted Lazard’s performance this season.
In other team news, Riley Patterson will take over as kicker against the Houston Texans, replacing Greg Zuerlein, who was placed on injured reserve after a series of struggles. Patterson, 25, hasn’t played this season but has prior experience with the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns, successfully making 88% of his field goal attempts (59 of 67).
Additionally, the Jets placed defensive tackle Leki Fotu on IR for the second time due to a knee injury.
