KC Chiefs Add Cornell Powell, a 2021 fifth-round selection, to Their Offseason Roster

In order to compete in the wide receiver room, Kansas City is holding onto one of its previous draft picks.

With the new league year fast coming and rosters for the summer growing to ninety men, teams will have an abundance of freedom in the secondary positions.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who increased their total on Wednesday, are no exception.

Cornell Powell, a wide receiver, has been re-signed by Kansas City to the offseason roster, per the NFL’s daily personnel notice. Houston’s Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 confirmed this.

Powell, who recently completed his third season in the NFL, was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2021 draft.

In his three games with the team so far, he has played three offensive snaps and totaled 28 special teams reps during Weeks 11–13 of the 2022 season.

Other than that, Powell has made frequent appearances on Kansas City’s practice squad but hasn’t had much success breaking into the starting lineup.

Powell had a good opportunity to make an impression on the team last summer, and he did. His case was bolstered by a productive training camp and six preseason receptions for 63 yards on seven targets.

He did not, however, make it out of camp on the 53-man roster after he injured his hamstring in the season finale against the Cleveland Browns. Powell returned to the practice squad, much like he had in the past.

Powell, 26, made a name for himself at Clemson during his final year. The former Tiger had a strong pre-draft process, highlighted by a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, a 108 broad jump, and a 36.5 vertical jump. He hauled in 53 catches for 882 yards and seven touchdowns.

That increased his draft stock to the point where the Chiefs selected him on Day Three.

Powell will be an off-roster wide receiver, joining players like Montrell Washington and Shi Smith (reserve/futures contracts) for the upcoming summer.

Over the next several months, there may be possibilities for others to step up as the active roster and depth chart may change.

Powell will have an opportunity to demonstrate his progress during OTAs, regardless of the number of pass catchers Kansas City adds or subtracts.

Can the former 181st overall pick advance further in the rankings? The door is now wide open for it as a result.
