With all of Lady Gaga’s pink feathers, it was genuinely la vie en rose during the 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Paris.
The well-known vocalist made a fashion statement on Friday during the grand opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics at Square Barye in Paris by performing in front of a sea of pink feathers. After finishing her most recent Jazz & Piano performances in Las Vegas, the Oscar winner traveled to the City of Lights sporting her showgirl look. Wearing a black feather jacket, satin bustier, black and pink skirt adorned with feathers and sequins, gloves, and a headpiece that matched, she danced and sang “Mon Truc en Plumes” with aplomb. A group of dancers in black were joined by the Joker: Folie à Deux star, who was carrying pink fans and pom-poms with feathers.
The thirteen-time GRAMMY winner, 38, is accustomed to singing in French. She has regularly performed “La Vie en rose” by Édith Piaf, another beloved French song, including in the 2018 A Star Is Born remake.
“I am incredibly appreciative that I was asked to inaugurate the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. “I am deeply honored to have been requested by the organizing committee of the Olympics to play a unique French song, which pays tribute to the French people and their remarkable legacy in art, music, and theater,” she posted on Instagram following the show. “This song was performed by Paris-born French ballerina Zizi Jeanmaire, who made her name in 1961 with her rendition of “Mon Truc en Plumes.” It says “My Thing with Feathers” in the title. Furthermore, our paths have intersected before.”
Jeanmaire was featured in Anything Goes, which Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga recorded in 2014. “I wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the heart of France, celebrate French art and music, and on such a momentous occasion remind everyone of one of the most magical cities on earth—Paris,” the artist continued. “Even though I am not a French artist, I have always felt a very special connection with French people and singing French music.” “We rented pom poms from the actual French cabaret venue, Le Lido Archive. We worked with Dior to design unique outfits out of feathers that spontaneously molted. I studied French choreography that reimagined a classic French dance. I spent countless hours practicing a happy French dance and brushing up on some old moves. You would be surprised to discover that when I first started out, I used to dance at a French party on the Lower East Side in the 1960s.”
Gaga sent a message to everyone in France celebrating the Summer Olympics as she wrapped up her tweet. “I hope this performance brings you as much joy as it does. I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone in France for allowing me to perform in your honor; it was a gift I will never forget! To every athlete participating in the Olympics this year, congratulations! I am really honored to sing for you and encourage you!” she exclaimed. “Every time I watch the Olympic Games, I cry! You have unbelievable talent. “Let the games start!”
