He will be replaced by Gardner Minshew
After just making his second start in the ongoing season for the Las Vegas Raiders in the National Football League (NFL), quarterback Aidan O’Connell will be sidelined for a certain period after sustaining a thumb injury.
When O’Connell was trying to throw during the Las Vegas Raiders’ 33-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, his hand got hurt when it struck Rams linebacker Kam Curl’s helmet.
He made his way directly to the locker room after leaving the field. O’Connell sustained a thumb injury during the first quarter and was unable to return to the field.
The Raiders recently learnt of O’Connell’s injury, which was not good news. He may have broken his thumb, according to the reports. The quarterback will be sidelined for four to six weeks as a result, and the Raiders have placed him on injured reserve.
The story was initially reported by ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, who shared it on his X account.
“Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell now is expected to miss four to six weeks with a broken thumb, per sources. He is getting a second opinion today to confirm the initial diagnosis,” Schefter said.
This season, O’Connell started as Gardner Minshew’s backup for the Raiders. However, Minshew was benched by the Raiders following a 2-3 start to the season. He completed 27 of 40 throws for 227 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in his first Raiders start. O’Connell completed six of ten throws for fifty-two yards during the game against the Rams.
O’Connell has completed 52 of 82 passes for 455 yards in the 2024 season, along with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Las Vegas Raiders will look back to Gardner Minshew after O’Connell’s thumb injury
With Aidan O’Connell making it to the injured reserve, Gardner Minshew will once again take the quarterback duties for the Las Vegas Raiders. After being benched for O’Connell last week, Minshew will once again start for the Raiders.
Against the Los Angeles Rams, Minshew had his poorest game of the year. He lost a fumble and threw three interceptions. This season, he has only made eight interceptions. He has completed the season with 1,168 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
His team won both games with to Minshew’s outstanding performance against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. Against the Ravens, he had his best game of the season, completing 30 of 38 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
