In 2023, the government will increase the standard deduction for taxpayers and adjust all seven federal income tax bracket levels, allowing people to deduct more from their taxes due to consistently strong inflation. The Justice Department has filed allegations accusing two tax return preparers in Las Vegas of cheating their clients.

According to complaints filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada, Michael Moreno and his business Awesome Tax LLC, as well as Carlos Yero and his business Travel All The World, have been preparing and filing thousands of federal income tax returns for clients since at least 2018.

It is said that Moreno, Yero, and their businesses frequently submitted false returns to the IRS, feigning to overestimate the amount of refund owed, all the while informing their clients that they would only receive a smaller refund. The significant difference between these funds would reportedly be collected by Moreno and Yero as “bank fees” at that point. According to the complaints, “bank fees” are charged on a per-return basis and can vary from $300 to $800.

Yero and Travel All The World are accused of causing a tax loss of $2.64 million in 2019 alone, while Moreno and Awesome Tax are said to have generated a tax loss of about $2.74 million in both 2018 and 2019.

The declaration was made by the Tax Division of the Justice Department’s Deputy Assistant Attorney General, David A. Hubbert.

The matter is being handled by attorneys from the Tax Division of the Justice Department.
