LOS ANGELES Pitcher Gavin Stone of the Dodgers will probably miss the entire 2025 season after missing all of September due to an injury. The team revealed on Saturday that the right-hander underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Wednesday.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache of Los Angeles performed the treatment; the Dodgers did not provide many information. When questioned during his off-day press conference at Dodger Stadium ahead of the National League Championship Series, manager Dave Roberts had no precise information.
had a successful shoulder surgery. discovered a great deal of what was occurring in the shoulder,” Roberts stated on Saturday. “It is unlikely that he will return in ’25.”
Though Tony Gonsolin was anticipated to miss all of 2024 following his Tommy John surgery in September of 2023, it’s never too soon to say never. He’s at least being considered for a possible berth on the Dodgers’ NLCS roster, which is set to be announced on Sunday.
Stone made significant progress in 2024, posting a 3.53 ERA and 3.94 xERA after earning the fifth starting spot during spring training, following some growing pains in his first taste of the majors in 2023. Technically speaking, he was the staff’s most durable pitcher, leading the group in starts (25), innings (140⅓), and victories (11).
With shoulder irritation, Stone was put on the disabled list on September 6. At the time, the intention was for him to stop throwing for ten days and then decide what to do. However, he was never able to fully return to throwing due to his shoulder problems, and on September 24, he was placed on the 60-day injured list, thereby terminating his season.
He now adds himself to the growing list of starting pitchers who had surgery this year and will likely miss most or all of 2025. A few weeks after Kyle Hurt’s Tommy John surgery, River Ryan underwent the same procedure in the middle of August. The best case scenario for those two is a return in the final month or so of the following season.
Emmet Sheehan will probably be sidelined until at least the 2025 All-Star break after undergoing a hybrid Tommy John and internal brace procedure on May 22.
This season, eleven different starting pitchers for the Dodgers who were on the 40-man roster were placed on the disabled list.
