Buccaneers, Liam Coen Hire Former Sean McVay Understudy, Los Angeles Rams Coach

Although this one won’t damage Los Angeles, former Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen brought another former Rams coach to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The departure of the coaching staff has been the main focus of the Los Angeles Rams offseason, at least so far. The Rams, who surpassed almost all predictions in 2023, have gained the parity factors that maintain the NFL (relatively) cyclical.

Sean McVay, the head coach, is used to criticism of his coaching staff. Being among the best brains in the sport comes with territory.

News of the hiring of former Rams offensive line coach Kevin Carberry by Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who now holds the same role, surfaced on Wednesday.

Jan. 2, 2022; Baltimore, Maryland, USA: Kevin Carberry, offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams, during the second half of the team’s game at M&T Bank Stadium versus the Baltimore Ravens.

Carberry, who takes over as offensive line coach for Tampa Bay, will be replacing 2023 offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who resigned to take the position leading the Carolina Panthers.

This time, though, the action does not signal a need to bring on more coaches; rather, it only serves as a sign of the Rams’ growing power inside the league. Coen and Carberry last worked together in the 2022 season, which coincided with Los Angeles’ hangover after the Super Bowl. In 2023, Coen assumed the role of coordinator at Kentucky, and Carberry worked as the assistant offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints for a season.

With Carberry on the staff, New Orleans rated 25th in run blocking and 26th in pass protection, according to Pro Football Focus.

Prior to his two-year contract with Los Angeles (2021–2022), Carberry expanded his resume to include both professional and college expertise. Following four seasons as a defensive lineman, both domestically and overseas, in the NFL and two semi-pro leagues, Carberry began his coaching career at St. Ignatius College Prep as the defensive coordinator and special teams coach.

After forcing them to relocate to Kansas for three seasons, he served as Stephen F. Austin’s defensive end coach in 2012 and 2013. He would remain on the offensive end of the ball for the remainder of his coaching tenure.

Before spending an additional two seasons in Washington, Carberry worked as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. In 2018, he went back to collegiate play, serving as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator for three seasons at Stanford.
