Good news: The Los Angeles Rams hired Iowa State’s offensive coordinator as their new…

Nate Scheelhaase, the offensive coordinator for Iowa State, is reportedly leaving to become a coach with the Los Angeles Rams.

For the 2024 season, the Los Angeles Rams want to bring on Nate Scheelhaase, who is currently the offensive coordinator at Iowa State, as their new pass game specialist, according to ESPN. Scheelhaase, 33, will become a member of Sean McVay’s coaching staff, taking Jake Peetz’s place, who left last offseason to take a position as the pass game coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.

At his alma mater, Illinois, Scheelhaase started his coaching career in 2013. He started out working with running backs before switching to an offensive analyst position from 2016 to 2017. In 2018, he became a member of Iowa State’s coaching staff, first taking on the role of running backs coach. The next season, he was promoted to wide receiver coach.

Scheelhaase was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 and significantly improved the offensive output of the Cyclones throughout his tenure. The club improved significantly under his leadership, scoring an average of six more points per game (20.2 to 26.2) than they did the year before. In addition, Iowa State had 11 touchdown plays of at least 50 yards, which topped the country.

Scheelhaase was essential to Rocco Becht, the quarterback for Iowa State, in his growth. After throwing for 3,120 yards and 23 touchdowns, the redshirt freshman’s stellar performance won him the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year title. Notably, Scheelhaase served as an assistant coach at Iowa State under the leadership of current 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, a former standout for the Cyclones.

This action continues a recent trend in which collegiate coaches are making the switch to the professional ranks during the offseason. Famous examples include Jim Harbaugh, who left Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers; Ryan Grubb, who moved from Alabama to become the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks; and Jeff Hafley, who left Boston College to become the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
