You would never realise that Matthew Stafford was among the oldest players in the NFL during the previous season from seeing him play. In 2023, he continued to be as accurate as ever, consistently dismantling defences with sidearm shoots, deep throws to Puka Nacua, and no-look throws.
His 36 years of age raises recurrent concerns about his future in the league. Although supporters are loving his current run with the Rams, they are also interested in learning how long he intends to play, particularly in light of the contract adjustments he and the team made this offseason.
Stafford appears to have no intention of retiring anytime soon, which may be the reason he reportedly requested more guaranteed money in 2025 and 2026 during the summer contract negotiations.
Stafford recently stated on “Pardon My Take” that he intends to play for another three or four years.
We were just talking about plays from my rookie year, and it’s like, man, that was a long, long time ago. Every year that I play now, I just cherish so much and I remember back on,” he remarked. It’s sort of amazing to think about it, but I go into a locker room with players that were 6, 7, 8, and 9 years old when I first joined the league. However, I am grateful for this game and my opportunities. It’s really given me a lot. I’m hoping I have three or four more to give. We’ll see. Although every year is fresh, I do feel good.
When asked if he considers himself a Hall of Famer or the fact that he is 11th all-time in passing yards with 56,047 yards, Stafford said that these thoughts don’t cross his head too often. Though he is honoured to be named one of the league’s all-time greats, he doesn’t give it much thought.
“I have a great deal of respect for this game as far as the history books go,” he remarked. “I was the child who grew up seeing voiceovers from folks like Steve Sabol and NFL Films. I had all my heart set on Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, Johnny Unitas, and the other players. I have a great deal of respect for this game, so being in the same vicinity as men like that and having that sort of conversation is really humbling. I don’t think about it often, but when it does come up, I’m really grateful.
Although Stafford’s deal was modified by the Rams last month, he now has less guaranteed money in subsequent years even though he is bound through the 2026 season. This makes it possible for the Rams and Stafford to resume talks in the spring, which might result in a split or a multi-year contract extension for the seasoned quarterback.
Stafford may wish to play elsewhere if he believes he can play for another three or four years and the Rams are not sure he can manage that. However, if the Rams and the team are in agreement, it wouldn’t be shocking if they signed a new contract the following offseason.
