Jalen Ramsey, a cornerback for the Miami Dolphins, had his first practice on Friday in a few weeks.

When word leaked out on Friday about Jalen Ramsey’s contract extension with the Miami Dolphins, he was back on the practice field.

He clarified after practice that there was no coincidence, but the key question at this point is whether he will be able to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For the previous two weeks, Ramsey has been sidelined by a hamstring ailment that prevented him from practicing on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ramsey remarked, “Man, I always want to play football.” “I never take for granted the opportunities I get.” One thing you guys should have learnt from me the previous year, I believe, is that I attempt to break any deadlines that I’m given. I make every effort to be present on the pitch in some form. But I also have to trust the coaches and the training staff, and sometimes I think I have to be sensible and hold myself back. It’s challenging, but that’s what we’re figuring out at the moment. Let’s see. We’ll see what my availability and capacity are on game day, or whenever that may be.”

He made note of the possibility that the decision to keep him out of the opening might have anything to do with the Dolphins’ Week 2 clash against the Buffalo Bills next Thursday night.

“Yeah, I think that’s a big key to this whole equation,” Ramsey remarked. “It’s two games in five days, so maybe people not realizing that but that’s huge and you never trying to look ahead like that but you know obviously the opponents and the division game, just taking everything into the equation you’ve got to think about it all and be really smart.”

Should the young cornerbacks Ethan Bonner and Storm Duck be needed against the Jaguars, Ramsey expressed his confidence in them.

Ramsey noted that playing the Jaguars bore no particular significance, despite Jacksonville being the team that selected him fifth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He has already played them, with his Los Angeles Rams winning 37-7 in 2021, which is one of the reasons.

RAMSEY TALKS HIS NEW CONTRACT

With the new agreement, Ramsey will once again be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. His annual salary will average just over $24 million, surpassing Patrick Surtain II’s deal that he signed this week with the Denver Broncos.

Although Ramsey acknowledged that the contract had been agreed upon a few days prior, he preferred to hold off on sharing the news until after he had started practicing.

“It got done a few days ago,” Ramsey said, “but, yeah, I just felt like it wasn’t right to have it out there and not be happy on the field with the guys, so I just tried to hold it for a few days.”

Ramsey talked about his thoughts on the extension.

“It’s always important to feel valued, first of all,” he remarked. “Receive compensation for all of your efforts, commitment, selflessness, and other contributions to an organisation, and be rewarded accordingly. Thus, everything is OK.
