Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, suffered a concussion during Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Miami Dolphins have not yet determined whether to place the former All-American from Alabama on injured reserve. On Monday, though, the NFL team did add a quarterback to its roster.

Snoop Huntley was signed by the Dolphins from the practice squad of the Baltimore Ravens. Huntley joined the Ravens in 2020 and, in the three seasons prior to that, he started nine games in lieu of Lamar Jackson due to injury.

Due to Tagovailoa’s injury, Miami’s available quarterbacks were Tim Boyle from the practice squad and his backup, Skylar Thompson.

The addition of Huntley does not directly relate to Skylar’s role as Tua’s backup, according to Miami coach Mike McDaniel. This is mainly for the profundity. Giving this team another player with starting experience and another inclusion of a reliable signal-caller certainly improves the dynamic in the room, in my opinion. I was pleased with Boyle’s addition and what we were able to accomplish in the quarterback room, but I believe that this was more of a depth move in order to support Skylar. You always let competition play out on the field.

Since Tagovailoa does not have a comeback date set, it is unclear if the Dolphins will require further depth. Miami’s next game is scheduled for Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CDT on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.

When asked if Tagovailoa would go on injured reserve, McCarthy responded, “Not enough information quite yet.” “That will be determined by medical professionals. Chris (Grier), the general manager of the Dolphins, and I can talk about that once we have the necessary facts and have spoken with Tua. I’m not quite ready to say if that could or couldn’t be distinguished. We’ll find out in the upcoming days.

Before returning to action, an injured reserve player must sit out at least four games.

Tagovailoa’s future in the game is highly concerning due to his history of concussions, and regardless of his IR status, he cannot play until he passes the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Tagovailoa was at the Dolphins’ training facility on Monday, according to McDaniel.

“He was grinning with his teammates downstairs today,” McCarthy remarked. “As far as I’m concerned, you’re in the protocol, and I think he’s doing well today and we take it day-by-day. He’s working with the trainers and medical team carefully.

“He felt well, but in terms of a diagnostic, what does that mean? I tend to base my opinions more on learning the outcome of the medical checkup and his current state than on my encounters with him.

“I know his teammates were excited to see him, and it was nice to see him.”

During the 2022 season, Tagovailoa missed five games due to two concussions. However, the quarterback returned and led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 while starting 17 games during the regular season and one playoff game for the Dolphins.
