Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, appears to be having fruitful talks with the team on a potential deal.
Despite not having reached an agreement on a new contract just yet, Miami and Tagovailoa have maintained constant communication since June, according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN, who made this revelation on SportsCenter.
“While I can’t say that there is anything imminent in terms of a deal as we inch closer to training camp, I can at least tell you that there have been active negotiations since then,” Darlington stated. “They’re still trying to resolve things in a really cordial manner. By no means does it seem like this is headed in the wrong direction.”
According to the June reports, Tagovailoa’s contract did not fall inside the range of Trevor Lawrence or Jared Goff. While Lawrence inked a five-year, $275 million agreement in June, Goff signed a four-year, $212 million extension in May.
Tagovailoa looks deserving of a contract that size based on his regular season output. In his four seasons, he has a 32-19 overall record, 12,639 throwing yards, and 81 touchdowns. In 2023, he passed for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions while helping Miami to an 11-6 season.
The Dolphins have struggled in the postseason despite their success in the regular season, and Tagovailoa has only played a full season once.
2024 may be the 26-year-old’s prove-it year, even if both parties would prefer to seal a deal before the season starts.
