Ann Arbor, Michigan – Jim Harbaugh has had an interesting offseason, from interviews with the Denver Broncos to discussions with the NCAA about potential breaches in Michigan’s football program and the termination of an assistant coach under investigation by police.
“Compare us to perfect, and we’ll fall short in most areas,” Harbaugh said Thursday in his first press conference since the season ended. “Compare us to any other program, I think you’re going to see that it doesn’t get any better.”
A year after stating the door was closed on a return to the NFL, the former San Francisco 49ers coach spoke with the Broncos about their empty coaching position, which was later filled by Sean Payton.
According to Harbaugh, several coaches on his staff spoke with NFL teams before deciding to stay at the school.
“I’m one of them,” he admitted. “People do what they think is best for them professionally and personally.”
There was only one coaching change. Matt Weiss, co-offensive coordinator, was fired in January for failing to attend a meeting to discuss whether he had gotten access to other people’s computer accounts, according to school documents.

“I am aware of the rumors and speculation over the past few days,” Harbaugh stated in a statement on Thursday. “College and NFL teams have great interest in all our personnel, from players to coaches to staff, and I truly believe that is a testament to the strength of our University of Michigan football program.”
