Breaking: The offensive coordinator position will be filled by an assistant coach at Michigan Wolverines.

The Michigan Wolverines are elevating an assistant coach to the position of offensive coordinator.

With former head coach Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL, the Michigan Wolverines are rapidly turning the page to 2024 after winning the CFP National Championship. Late last month, Harbaugh was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers, and Sherman Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Wolverines, was swiftly promoted to take over as head coach.

Once more, Michigan intends to fill the open OC post through internal promotion. The Wolverines anticipate elevating quarterback coach Kirk Campbell to offensive play-caller, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

The Wolverines continued to be associated with outside contenders, such as Andy Ludwig of Utah. But Michigan will use Campbell for another internal promotion.

Kirk Campbell, the offensive coordinator, is back.

In 2022, Campbell began working as an offensive analyst for the Michigan Wolverines. After a year, he was promoted, and the next season, he was the team’s quarterback coach.

He worked with J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback whose draft stock has increased dramatically in the last campaign. McCarthy might be selected in the first few picks of the next NFL draft. This season, Campbell also got to call plays since Sherrone Moore, the offensive coordinator at the time, was suspended for the first several games.

In the season opener, Campbell called it a masterful game as his team defeated East Carolina. With quarterback J.J. McCarthy completing an extremely efficient 26 of 30 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns, the Wolverines won 30-3. In the meantime, Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards combined for 22 rushes for 110 yards and a touchdown. McCarthy’s completion percentage in a single game among players who attempted at least thirty was a record for Michigan.

Campbell called plays at Old Dominion from 2020 to 2021, prior to Michigan. In his final season, the Monarchs scored 27.6 points per game and finished 6-7. Darriel Mack Jr. and Hayden Wolff, the quarterback duo, combined for 15 touchdowns versus 14 interceptions.

Michigan Wolverines: 2024 Retooling

J.J. McCarthy and Blake Corum, the starting backfield for the Wolverines, will go to the NFL draft. McCarthy’s replacement, Sherrone Moore, the new head coach, may still browse the transfer portal.

But the majority of the best candidates have already made commitments to other universities. At quarterback right now, there are four options: Davis Warren, Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji, and 2024 recruit Jadyn Davis.

This season, Denegal completed 4 of 5 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Next season, the former three-star prospect might get some playing time. In the meantime, none of Warren’s five passes this year were completed.
