Mike Tyson’s Fight Against Jake Paul Paul was postponed on medical advice.
The July 20 fight scheduled to take place in Texas between former world champion Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has been rescheduled.
Although Tyson, 57, claims he has been unable to train due to a recent flare-up of an ulcer, the fight had been officially sanctioned as a professional fight at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
“Unfortunately, my doctor has advised me to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover due to my ulcer flareup,” Tyson stated.
“My entire body is in better shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I am going to soon resume my full training regimen.
The rematch between Amanda Serrano and light-welterweight champion Katie Taylor was scheduled for that same night, but organizers have not mentioned it. It is expected that the bout will be moved along with the rest of the card. According to Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), who are organizing the fight alongside Netflix at the 80,000-cap stadium, a new date for the match will be revealed on June 7.
“It is advised that Mike Tyson engage in moderate to light training during the upcoming weeks before proceeding with full training without any restrictions,” MVP stated.
“Mike and Jake both think that it is only right to make sure that each athlete gets the same amount of training time so they can be ready for this crucial game and perform to the best of their abilities.
“Our primary concern is the health and well-being of athletes, and we fully support Mike in taking the time he needs to reach his own performance goals.”
Tyson, who would have turned 58 at the time of the fight and whose professional career ended in 2005, most recently competed in an exhibition bout in 2020.
In 1987, he became the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles concurrently. However, his unbeaten streak ended abruptly in 1990 when Buster Douglas defeated him in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
Despite being thirty years younger than Tyson, Paul, 27, has prevailed in nine of his ten fights, most of which have been against former UFC opponents. In February 2023, he lost to British boxer Tommy Fury.
“I completely endorse postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night,” he continued.
